Tamron is one of the top independent lens manufacturers, and this ultra-lightweight telephoto zoom is the perfect match for many Nikon AF 35mm, APS and digital SLR cameras, most manual focus models and Fujifilm DSLRs (see full list below). It's boxed and comes with lens caps, hood and instructions.

The zoom range covers many popular focal lengths including 80mm portrait, 100mm and 135mm medium tele up to 210mm telephoto (plus of course all those in between), making this lens ideal for great pictures of sports, portraits, children, wildlife, travelling and many other subjects. Angle of view 30 to 12 degrees (on film cameras). The zoom ring is enormous - almost half the size of the lens itself - and has a ribbed rubber grip for smooth, easy handling.

It's even better for many Nikon, Fujifilm and other Nikon mount digital SLR camera users (see below), where the effective focal length range is equivalent to approximately 120-315mm, giving extra telephoto power for free. The 2x high speed crop modes on cameras such as the D2X increase the effective focal length range to 160-420mm. Full frame coverage on the D3 and suitable Kodak models.

This AF lens focuses automatically or manually on AF and most digital cameras, or manually on AI models and the D40, D40X and D60 digital. Close focusing down to 1.5m (4.9 feet) at all focal lengths. This provides a macro reproduction ratio of 1:5.8 (between one fifth and one sixth life size) at 210mm, filling the frame with a subject as small as 140x210mm (6x9 inches) on film, and even smaller on digital. The manual focus ring operates smoothly and has a wide, rubber-covered surface, making it fast and positive to use - many early AF lenses have very narrow focus rings with loose actions. Distances are clearly marked in feet and meters.

Auto diaphragm and full aperture metering on all AF, AI, AIS and digital cameras, with mechanical and electronic couplings, including Nikon D compatibility for all exposure modes including 3D Matrix. The maximum aperture is f/4.5-5.6, and the lens stops down to f/22-32 for maximum depth of field. As this lens has an aperture ring (unlike modern Nikkor G and some independent types) it can be used on Nikon manual focus cameras as well, including the very early pre-AI types (with stopped down metering) - see below. There's a lock for the minimum aperture setting - used on AF cameras and manual focus models in program or shutter priority modes. ADR (Aperture Direct Readout) scale for displaying the aperture in the viewfinder of suitable cameras.

Multicoated (MC) glass to reduce flare against the light, and increase contrast and colour fidelity. The front of the lens has a standard, compact 52mm filter thread, and an external bayonet mount for a dedicated 1C6FH lens hood (supplied), which helps to reduce the chance of flare even further. The hood reverses over the front of the lens for storage. Optical construction is 9 elements in 8 groups. The lens is incredibly small and lightweight, at under 100mm (4 inches) long on the camera at its smallest settings, and a mere 290g! Tamron model 278D.

The lens is in fully working order and excellent condition. Aperture, zoom and focus controls work very smoothly, and AF works well. The diaphragm stops down smartly and is free of oil. Each aperture setting clicks into place very positively, and the lock holds securely. The glass is in excellent condition with no scratches, bubbles, fungus, cleaning marks or other problems, beyond some tiny specks of dust as usual, which won't affect the pictures at all. Cosmetically the lens has a smooth dark grey finish, bright paintwork and only a few small surface marks here and there - mainly on the rear mount where it's been fitted to a camera. The box is showing some signs of age (and is missing its original internal packaging), but the accessories are in good condition.

No dents, dings or deep scratches, the filter thread is undamaged, and overall it's in great shape!

AF lenses do not have the meter coupling fork for older (pre-1977, non-AI) cameras, but can be used with stopped down metering, and manual or auto exposure on suitable models.
