THE MODERN VERSION OF THE ROTARY CONVERTER
You are looking at a NEW 7½ HP DIGITAL PLUG and PLAY phase converter,
This unit will convert a 40 Amp single phase 240 Volt supply into a 415 Volts 3 phase regulated output at up to 12 Amps per phase, as long as your machine only requires a 3 phase + earth supply and is a simple motor/switch type machine you can simply connect your machine and run it,
You have to take into account the STARTING SURGE required by your machine when sizing up your converter, at START UP a 3 phase motor will draw between 3 & 8 times the normal running power, how far up this scale the surge will be all depends on the inertia of the load that the motor is driving so for example a milling machine like a Bridgeport with a 2HP spindle motor will be at the lower end on the scale and require a starting surge of approx 6 HP so well within the 15 HP limit of this converter where as a 5 HP planning machine with an 18" cutter block may well require 5 times the normal load so will need approx 25 HP to get it running so this unit wont be capable of powering it,
This converter is designed to run at 7½ HP continuously BUT it is able to give a 12½ HP surge for 30 seconds to allow for this starting current, 7½ HP is equivalent to around 12 Amps per phase at 400 Volts output from the converter with a 16 Amps overload rating for 30 seconds,
If you want to run machines that contain electronics you can run the output of this converter through a Sine Wave Filter(see my
), this will process the output waveform so you are able to run machines that have electronics in them,
The converter has an inbuilt OUTPUT VOLTAGE REGULATOR, this system monitors the output and will adjust the internal power stages to compensate for the load applied to the system as well as compensating for power input fluctuations, in fact this unit will take from 210 Volts up to 260 Volts and still give you a regulated 400 Volts per phase output so its happy to run on generators or sites where the mains supply is not very well regulated,
Should you have a machine that as well as three phase also requires a NEUTRAL line then you can have that added to this converter system as an option but as a N line is simply a way that the machine can get 240 Volts back from the 415 Volts 3 phase to power some low voltage item within the machine we will often be able to talk you through feeding an external 240 Volts supply to whatever requires it thus saving on the cost of a NEUTRAL OUTPUT option, if you require this option you can see the required unit in my EBAY
,
This unit can also be fitted with a BOOST option, this option is an ENERGY STORE rather like a short term battery, it charges up when your machines are either OFF or running at normal power, this takes less than a second to do BUT when ever you start your machine and it requires the STARTING SURGE rather than drawing the required power to get the motor up and running from your mains supply it is taken from the BOOST PACK, this helps you to get large machines up and running BUT is also buffers your incoming supply from these surges so you don't get your lights flickering each time you start a machine, this way you wont annoy the wife in the house while you are out in the workshop !, running 3 phase welders is one time this feature can come in very useful as if you have ever run a large single phase MIG welder you will problem have already experienced the flickering light effect each time you strike up the arc, we can advise you on the required BOOST option for your setup, please call us on 01773 811038 between 10AM and 10PM and we will be happy to assist you,
Whilst we are on the subject of welding machines this unit is able to run 3 phase welding machines like MIG sets up to around 240 Amps without problems,
The unit is approximately 290mm high by 195mm Wide and a depth of 220mm so it can be wall mounted with ease, it weighs in at only 6 Kg, the INPUT connection is at the bottom left, this connects to your 240 Volts INPUT, to run this converter at FULL LOAD you will require a 40 Amps capacity supply, this is not normally a problem as its the same supply as a domestic cooker/oven will run from as well as modern power showers so any electrician will be able arrange a suitable supply, we have found that its often best NOT to mention to the electrician what you want the supply for but simply tell him where you want it and that you require a 40 Amp supply with an isolator fitting here, often the mention of 3 PHASE or PHASE CONVERTERS will see the price quoted for the job double even though he will be doing exactly the same thing as he would running a supply to power a cooker !,
The 415 Volts 12 Amp per phase output is at the bottom right, this can be connected to the optional filters/neutral generators or simply be wired to a 4 pin output socket, we are able to supply extra plugs, sockets, cable and isolators as required so please see my EBAY
or contact us if you require any extra parts for the installation,
The unit itself is almost silent with only the slight noise from a small fan and the sound of the internal transformer audible, if none of your machines are powered up this unit will draw very little power from the mains supply, its rated to run 24 hours a day if required so powering loads like heat pumps or fridge compressors is not a problem,
If you have an unusual machine that your are not sure about powering please contact us and we will be able to advise you if this unit is compatible, once we have the information on the machines you want to power we will tell you if this unit is OK for the job and we will then guarantee to get your machine up and running or we will sort it out for you and if we fail to do that we will offer you a full refund, the unit will be despatched on a pallet via TNT but collection is welcome, we are located just off J27 on the M1 to the NORTH of Nottingham, our full address can be found on our web site and the link is shown on our EBAY
page,
Our technical help-line is open from 10AM untill 10PM 7 days a week and the contact number is 01773 811038 or 07976 766538,
Please contact us using the help-line if you have any questions at all about this system, we do have other sizes of this system from 5HP for small machines right up to 50HP systems capable of running an entire factory, we also have systems that are able to run from 2 PHASE 400-480 Volt power as found on some farm sites, see our EBAY
for more information,

Due to lack of sales we no longer supply the old fashioned style of STATIC or ROTARY phase converters, we have not sold any of these units in the last 3 years so we have withdrawn them from our site, both of these options have so many disadvantages they were just not viable for today's demanding applications, they may well be OK for running basic machines as an economy solution and for those of you that want to have a go at building your own STATIC or ROTARY converter you will find we have an item on EBAY that will tell you how to do this(do a search for PHASE CONVERTER GUIDE).
