600 Letter WWII Husband & Wife Collection ~Amazing! |
This collection of approximately 600 letters is the personal correspondence between WWII soldier Robert L. Kirkman, and his wife Carrie. Unlike many collections, both kept their letters and put them together at the end of the war. I bought these years ago with the intention of using them for a school project, but never got around to it. I have organized the letters by postmark and have read just a small sampling. The letters begin in March 1944 when Robert received his induction notice. He spent a good deal of time training with the Army Air Corps before finally heading overseas toward the end of the war. He spent time in Guam and Iwo Jima before coming back in March 1946. Like many young people at that time, Robert married just before going off to war. He and Carrie, both extremely literate, wrote each other several times per week. Carrie was a music teacher in North Carolina and she is quite a prolific writer. Many of her letters describe what it’s like being alone during the war. She gets quite passionate at times in her longing for her husband. Robert too is quite the romantic, and he writes often about his military activities. Both to them make a lot of pop culture references—music and movies. Included with the collection are numerous documents-- Robert’s induction paper and all of his transfer orders, and 10 editions of The Globetrotter, which was the newspaper of The USS General Heintzelman which Robert returned on. There are numerous photographs, including many of Robert and Carrie, and 2 sets of original photographs from Guam, a map of Guam, and several patches. This is as much as I know from just reading about 25 letters. Who knows what other great stuff is in there? All will be sent wrapped in plastic for protection and boxes securely (the tote in the photograph is not included).
