This is a group of 57 common Sahara Neolithic arrowheads and tools from the region of northern Mauritania (south-western Sahara desert).
The largest tool, is approximately 1 7/16th inches (37 mm) long.
The smallest, is a triangle at 3/4th inch long (18 mm).
This lot consists of: several types of ovate, stemmed, triangular, and small miscellaneous tools.
The condition is good, however some have ancient dings. Most are in pretty decent shape for having served as work tools and then been discarded for 4,000+ years. Minor dings such as these are to be expected given their delicate construction and usage; these tools were propelled at great speed toward wild animals, and have been exposed for millenia to the elements (they tend to be covered and uncovered over the centuries by migrating sand dunes).
Neolithic populations living around lakes in what is now the Sahara desert; used these tools in the hunt for and processing of waterfowl and small game found along the shores of once abundant Sahara lakes and rivers. The end of the Ice Age resulted in global climate changes which dried the lakes and forced these Neolithic (New Stone Age) peoples into new modes of existence, either agriculture which was just beginning at the end of the Neolithic, or a nomadic animal husbandry mode of existence. The New Stone Age was a very dynamic era giving rise to agriculture, pottery, and permanent settlements, all of which were milestones in humankinds march toward 'civilized' life. The Sahara Neolithic lasted from 9,000 to 4,000 BP (years Before Present).
