My Man Godfrey (Dir. Gregory La Cava, 1936): One of the top screwball comedies of all time, My Man Godfrey is a story of a wealthy New York family in the 1930s that brings in Godfrey, a destitute and "Forgotten Man," as its butler. William Powell plays the leading role brilliantly as Godfrey, giving the family a madcap ride they will never forget. The first film to receive Oscar nominations in all four acting categories, My Man Godfrey features stunning performances by William Powell and Carole Lombard.
His Girl Friday (Dir. Howard Hawks, 1940): This hilarious re-working of The Front Page by Ben Hecht and Charles MacArthur sees Grant as the savage editor and, in a switch, the reporter played by scheming Rosalind Russell. This version adds the twin lures of sex and romance. The film moves at whirlwind speed, as Director Howard Hawks instructed his actors to overlap their lines, so much so that at times everyone seems to be talking at once. Hawks also had his cast move at twice the normal speed so the screen looks frantic from scene to scene, thus conveying the urgency of the news world he was depicting. It's undoubtedly Cary Grant's greatest comedic role, proving once again the amazing versatility of this Hollywood legend.
My Dear Secretary (Dir. Charles Martin, 1949): Follows the amorous adventures of Kirk Douglas, as a playboy author, and Laraine Day, his secretary, who is also a budding writer. Their farcical antics are greatly supported by cast members Florence Bates, Irene Ryan and especially Keenan Wynn, who practically steals the show as Douglas' roommate. Fans of Douglas Sr. will enjoy this lighter side of the multi-talented actor who, incidentally, was eager to do comedy after being in so many serious roles.
Father's Little Dividend (Dir. Vincente Minnelli, 1951): Reprising his role from the 1950 release, 'Father Of The Bride', Spencer Tracy rejoins Joan Bennett, Elizabeth Taylor and Don Taylor in a charming sequel.Tracy portrays Elizabeth Taylor's father, Stanley Banks, who is still recovering from the effects of giving up his "little girl", Kay, to Buckley Dunstan, played by Don Taylor. Upon hearing the news that the newlyweds are expecting, Tracy opposes the new arrival, feeling the stresses of middle age and family life, but he eventually excepts the inevitable.
My Favourite Brunette (Dir. Elliott Nugent, 1947): In My Favorite Brunette we witness Bob Hope's own unique brand of film comedy as he teams up with the great screen beauty Dorothy Lamour (who later co-starred with him in many of the classic Road To... movies along with Bing Crosby). Co-starring Peter Lorre and Lon Chaney Jr., Hope romps through this yarn playing a bumbling photographer turned private eye and finds himself involved with a spy caper, the mob and a dangerous brunette. |
