Ragged Robin or Lychnis flos-cuculi, uk wildflower meadow perennial.

Ragged robin forms a rosette of low growing foliage and will produce numerous flower stems approximately 45 cm tall. The flower spikes rise above the foliage and branch near the top of the stem producing numerous pink flowers which are 3-4 cm across. There is a spectacular show of flowers in late spring and it will carry on flowering sporadically throughout summer if happy.

The flowers have five narrow petals deeply divided into four lobes giving the flower a beautifully ragged appearance, hence its common name.

One specific feature of Ragged-Robin is that the root contains saponins. This soap substitute that can be used for washing clothes, hair etc. and can be extracted by boiling the roots in water.

Easy to grow as long as soil is moist. Is very tolerant of cutting and can feature in damp flowering lawns. Will self seed. Attractive to butterflies and other insects. Get the wild meadow look.
