Selection of 3 hardback books
DANISH LANGUAGE TRANSLATIONS:
1970s-1980s MIXTURE OF CRIME, BUSINESS, ETC FICTION
Hardback books with paper dustcovers, published by Lademann, Copenhagen.
All in generally very good condition: individual details as outlined below:
1. OND NAT (Original English title: BURNT OFFERINGS)
by Arthur Hailey and John Castle
A New York couple think they have found the ideal opportunity to get away from it all when they take on the lease of a large house on the coast, with their only obligation to look after the property and watch over the old mother who lives alone behind a locked door. But slowly a nightmare begins to unfold ...
15.5 x 23.5 cm, 223 pages
The book is not dated precisely, but it would appear that the original novel was published in 1973 and this Danish translation probably appeared later in the 1970s.
The dustcover is fairly scuffed around the edges, with a 3 cm tear at the edge of the spine, and with all-round rubbing of the surfaces. Overall though it remains complete and generally sound.
The hardback book underneath has been very well protected and is in generally excellent condition thoughout.
2. SEPTEMBER, SEPTEMBER (Original English title: same, 1977)
by Shelby Foote
Memphis, Tennessee at the height of racial segregation tension in 1957 and three would-be kidnappers plan to exploit the situation by seizing a young black boy and demanding a ransom from his Grandfather, the richest coloured man in Memphis, giving the impression that the child is in the hands of vicious and desperate white supremacists.
13 x 20.5 cm, 255 pages, translation 1981.
The dustcover has minor scuffing to some of the edges and a few slight marks to the surfaces: otherwise overall very good.
The hardback book has been very well protected and, apart from some slight natural ageing of the paper, it remains in excellent condition.
3. SØLVFALKEN (Original English title: THE SILVER FALCON, 1977)
by Evelyn Anthony
The Silver Falcon is a racehorse and wealthy US owner Charles Schriber's goal in life is to see the Silver Falcon win the English Derby at Epsom. But that is not to be: Charles Schriber falls sick and dies before his ambition can be realised. His widow determines to carry out his final wish and send the horse to run in Europe. But with her husband's fortune now in her hands, and other interests in play, this sets off a chain of dangerous and unpredictable events.
15.5 x 23.5 cm, 245 pages.
Danish translation undated.
The dustcover has one small edge tear (approx 1.5 cm) and other minor scuffing around the edges, but otherwise it is complete and in a good sound state.
The hardback book underneath has been very well protected and apart from some slight shelfwear along the edges of the cover, it remains in excellent condition thoughout.
A small explanation:
In 2005, a very kind e-Bay member (gbc62007) posted a mixed lot of some 135 hardbacks on e-Bay: "Danish books going free to a good home".
Since then I have been gradually offering the books for sale on e-Bay, for Danish readers/learners who might be interested to bid for them, knowing that all the proceeds from the sale will be going to The Jamie Fund, to help improve facilities for young people.
You can read more about the background to The Jamie Fund on the Buy-it-Now listing for my fund-raising book Hey, Mr Big!, which you will find amongst my other items for sale here on e-Bay.
More than three quarters of the original collection of Danish books has now been sold, earning a most welcome boost for The Jamie Fund.
Buyers outside Europe should be aware that delivery by surface mail will usually take up to 8 weeks, and sometimes more. Please e-mail for details on airmail if more rapid delivery is required.
Any questions about the item, postage, insurance, or other delivery options please e-mail before bidding. I try to make my descriptions as helpful and accurate as possible. Any queries after delivery, e-mail me and I will do my best to sort it out. I am happy to say 'read my feedback.'
... and finally, perhaps you might take a moment to look at my book Hey, Mr Big! Most of the time you should be able to find a copy of the book advertised amongst my other items for sale on e-Bay. If the latest listing has finished though, you are most welcome to send me a message via e-Bay so that I can list a new copy for "Buy it Now".
All proceeds from the sale of Hey, Mr Big! are going to fund raising for the benefit of young people. You will find more details on the item description for the book.
Even if you can't manage to buy a copy for yourself, perhaps you know a friend who might be interested ....?
