    Introduction

The most rare and precious of all gems, natural colour diamonds are created only by the combination of unique factors: the magical alchemy of heat and pressure, plus the extremely rare occurrence of trace elements interacting with the diamond during its formation.

Of exceptional beauty, brilliance and worth, natural colour diamonds exhibit a dazzling array of colours including pinks, yellows, blues, greens, reds, oranges, browns, and even black.

These exotic, precious works of nature are prized by discerning collectors, royalty and celebrities, and by investors seeking quality natural colour diamonds of appreciating value.

    Investing in Colored Diamonds

For every 100,000 carats of flawless white diamonds mined, only one carat of colour diamond is found.

Colour diamonds are found occasionally in most of the world’s diamond mines but represent only a miniscule proportion of annual diamond production. Even from the famous Argyle Mine in Australia, which produces 95% of the world’s pink diamonds, less than 0.1% of the gems mined are rare pink diamonds. This geologically unique mine is slated for closure in 2018. As a result, the company has forecasted that pink diamonds shall become rarer and a key investment option.

Since the first diamonds were recovered from the mine, demand for these gems has attracted a cadre of elite and discrete buyers. The pink diamond jewellery market is now worth billions, sending prices skyrocketing.

Since 1990 quality natural colour diamonds have been appreciating at an average annual rate of 20%.

Twenty years ago a one carat Fancy Intense internally flawless pink diamond would have sold for approximately $70,000 a carat. Today that same diamond would be worth $500,000.

In May of 2008, a 3.73 carat Fancy Vivid blue diamond sold at a Christie’s auction in New York for USD $4.95 million or USD $1.3 million per carat, a world record price.

Historically, diamonds appreciate at about the rate money inflates and even more some years. Diamonds are luxury items not everyone can afford. It can last forever though. It has a fashion value as well as a intrinsic value.

    • If you cannot really trust banks. Cashing in gold and diamonds helped many Chinese escape from Indonesia back in 1997.
    • Some people consider their diamonds or gold as security.
    • Diamonds are emotional or family investments.
    • Less people are diamond investors. Jewelry requires a lot of specialized expertise.

        • Diameter

This is the large, flat top facet of a diamond.
        • Crown
The upper portion of a cut gemstone, above the girdle.
        • Girdle
The narrow rim of a diamond that separates the crown from the pavilion. It is the largest diameter to any part of the stone.
        • Pavilion
The lower portion of the diamond, below the girdle. It is sometimes referred to as the base.
        • Culet

        Ideal Cut
This cut is intended to maximize brilliance, and the typically smaller table sizes of these diamonds have the added benefit of creating a great deal of dispersion or 'fire' as well. Ideal quality diamonds are truly for the person who enjoys knowing that he has one of the finest things that money can buy. This category applies only to round diamonds.

        Premium
In the case of round diamonds, many Premium Cut diamonds have cuts that are the equal of any Ideal Cut diamond, though they often can be purchased at slightly lower prices than AGS Ideal Cuts. They are intended to provide maximum brilliance and fire. Like the Ideal Cut, these are also for the person who enjoys knowing that he has one of the finest things that money can buy.

        Very Good
These diamonds reflect most of the light that enters them, creating a good deal of brilliance. With these diamonds, the cutters have chosen to stray slightly from the preferred diamond proportions in order to create a larger diamond. The result is that these diamonds fall slightly outside of some customers' preferences in terms of, for example, table size or girdle width, though, in many cases many of the parameters of diamonds in this range will overlap with certain parameters of diamonds in the Ideal or Premium ranges. Generally, the price of these diamonds in slightly below that of Premium cuts.

        Good
Diamonds that reflect much of the light that enters them. Their proportions fall outside of the preferred range because the cutter has chosen to create the largest possible diamond from the original rough crystal, rather than cutting extra weight off to create a smaller Premium quality diamond. Diamonds in this range offer an excellent cost-savings to customers who want to stay in a budget without sacrificing quality or beauty.

        Fair & Poor
A diamond graded as fair or poor reflects only a small proportion of the light that enters it. Typically these diamonds have been cut to maximize the carat weight over most other considerations.

        COLOUR

Rare stones of exceptional colour – pink, red, blue, green or yellow are known as fancies and are graded as follows: Faint, Very Light, Fancy Light, Fancy, Fancy Intense, Fancy Deep and Fancy Vivid.

        CARAT

        1 Carat = 100 Points = 200 milligrams

        Photobucket

Carat is the unit of weight for all gemstones. One carat is subdivided into 100 ‘points’. Therefore, a diamond weighing 75 points is ¾ carat in weight, or 0.75ct.

        CLARITY

A diamond’s clarity is determined by the number, nature, position, size and colour of internal characteristics called ‘inclusions’ and surface features called ‘blemishes’. Clarity is measured on a scale ranging from pure (flawless) to heavily included (I-3).

Sample GIA & EGL Diamond Grading Reports

GIA: grading reports are the most common listed on the web (about 3/4's of all listings)

AGS: Diamond Quality reports are popular with Pricescoper’s buying ‘unseen’ because that lab has a better cut grade system for rounds and a few other shapes.

IGI: is the biggest lab by quantity. Most IGI graded stones are sold in stores.

EGL: is also a big lab and was a global franchise until the slightly stricter American EGL split away.

HRD: is a respected Belgian institution in Antwerp - a big trading center for rough and polished diamonds. HRD reports are more common in Europe and Asia.
