A  'Waster' pot, fired originally in the 2nd/3rd century A.D. dating kiln I discovered discovered locally here in Suffolk in the early 1970's  I excavated this kiln back at the time of its discovery only to find it had been used by its Romano-British owners as a rubbish dump and was filled with broken pots of all types this being the only basically complete pot to come out.. As you can see from the photos it has a crack running down one side, this would have happened during the original firing of the piece and it was therefore thrown into the 'dump' without ever being used. The two small portions of rim that are missing represent ancient breaks and would have broken off from the main pot at the time it was thrown away. It had been produced as a 'Strainer'  the fore-runner of the modern colander,   Diameter is 120mm x 60mm high. A nice example of to what all intents and purposes represents an early kitchen utensil
