Its natural home is the motorway and here it excels with a compliant ride and low noise levels making long journeys comfortable. The Sport model comes with lower suspension with the reward of better cornering ability.

The Passat's superb ride and low noise levels means occupants will feel well insulated on the move. The seats are excellent and offer good support as well as high comfort levels and there's plenty of cabin space too - rear passengers get decent head and legroom. In true Volkswagen tradition, most of the materials that come into direct contact with the occupants feel like premium car fittings.
 
The estate version of the Passat offers almost 30 litres more luggage space than the saloon with the rear seats in place. However, the ability to fold the chairs down flat means it's possible to carry larger and longer loads. It also increases the total available load capacity to 1,641 litres which is big enough for most things you can throw at the Passat.

The Sport model is well equipped with alloy wheels, six airbags, ESP, electronic parking brake, alarm, LED rear lights and door-mirror indicators, electrically adjustable and heated door mirrors, electric front and rear windows, umbrella compartment, electrically-adjustable driver's seat, eight-speaker CD audio system, a front centre arm rest and two rear vents, electronic two-zone climate control, automatic headlights, front foglights, front sports seats, rain-sensing wipers, auto-dimming rearview mirror and lowered suspension.

Volkswagen has taken upmarket features from the Phaeton and Touareg to help give the Passat a luxury car feel. The centre console stretches from the transmission tunnel to the dashboard and an electronic parking brake (which brakes all four wheels and can be used in an emergency to slow the car) is activated by a dashboard button and releases automatically when the driver is ready to move. Overall quality is excellent and all the switches and controls are well dampened while the driving position is spot-on with plenty of adjustment in the seat and steering column.

The Passat has achieved a five-star rating in the Euro NCAP crash test and scored four stars for child protection. ESP (an electronic stability programme) is standard as are front, side and curtain airbags, automatic pedal retraction, seatbelt reminder and active head restraints.
