Developing a replacement for the much-loved original Focus was an unenviable task, but Ford has successfully delivered. The second generation Focus is stylish, well equipped and is proving itself to be reliable. Plus while it's still as good to drive as ever, there's now more interior space and a genuine feeling of quality.

One of the Focus's greatest strengths is its handling. Even models with modest powerplants offer an enjoyable driving experience thanks to responsive steering and nimble yet surefooted behaviour through bends. Rivals have sought to catch up in this area, but few can match the Focus. Ride quality also benefits from the sophisticated suspension which provides a settled and composed ride at all times, even in sportier models.

The cabin of the Focus feels spacious and comfortable and there is easily room enough for five adults with good head and legroom - even in the rear. It's a refined environment in which to travel, especially on long journeys with limited engine and road noise. There's a generously sized load area and rear seats offer the usual 60/40 split folding capability. It lacks the fold flat trickery of some rivals though but there are numerous storage areas front and rear including a front armrest with a cubbyhole.

Ford has worked hard to raise quality in an attempt to take the fight to the Volkswagen Golf and the interior is well finished with soft touch materials. The driving position offers plenty of adjustment while the variable assistance power steering makes for easy parking and plenty of feedback on the move.

This model gets six airbags and scored a maximum five stars in the Euro NCAP crash tests for front and side impact. Anti-theft measures include an immobiliser and an alarm.

The Ghia model gets front electric windows and mirrors, climate control, cruise control and automatic wipers and headlights.
