This Volvo S40 is a clean break from the model that ran from 1996-2004. Whereas the old car picked up a slightly dowdy image by the end of its life, this model is stylish and well proportioned. It has some unique touches too - especially inside thanks to its clever 'floating' centre console while the chunky styling gives an air of solidity. It uses the same platform as the Ford Focus so is composed and surefooted on the road.

The S40 certainly feels nimble, especially if you're used to the traditionally vague handling characteristics of Volvos of old. Body roll is kept well in check although the pay-off is a somewhat fidgeting ride over rough roads but when cruising on the motorway the S40 is smooth and refined.

The compact Volvo offers decent space for the driver while the seats are incredibly comfortable. It's a bit of a squeeze for three adults in the back, but not too bad for two, with decent leg room and headroom is fine for anyone up to about 6ft tall. It's quiet as well with little intrusion from road and wind noise.

The S40's interior has a suitably up-market feel. The buttons for the sound system and climate control look beautifully crafted - like you'd expect to see on an expensive stereo - and housed on a slim centre console panel that looks like it's floating. Volvo seats are exemplary - supportive, comfortable and up to the job of long distances, while the driver has plenty of adjustment available to find a perfect driving position.

The S model comes with climate control, all-round electric windows, CD stereo and alloy wheels.

This car is 68% more rigid than the model it replaced and the front of the car is made from four grades of steel for improved crash performance. No surprise then that it gained a top five-star Euro NCAP rating - the safety association praising the S40 for its very strong and stable passenger safety cage. All cars get driver, passenger and side airbags, ABS and traction control while security consists of an immobiliser and unique-fit stereo.
