Summary
Less flash than a BMW and less brash than a Mercedes-Benz, the Saab 9-3 is the choice of the free-thinking buyer looking for distinctive, understated style, powerful engines and a comfortable, but sporty drive. It was also one of the first cars in the class to have a five-star Euro NCAP crash test rating. A facelift in mid 2007 brought a fresher, bolder, look with a re-designed front and rear end. Although 9-3 is well equipped, it is starting to feel its age in comparison with rivals - especially those from Germany.
Behind the wheel
Saab still makes comparisons with the fighter jets the other wing of their company makes and the 9-3 dogfights with the German prestige models. The dash layout has a hint of aircraft cockpit about it. It's enveloping, with lots of gadgets and important-looking switches. Unique to Saab is the night-panel switch, which dims all back-lit controls to reduce glare when driving in the dark. Finding a comfortable driving position is easy thanks to outstandingly supportive seats with plenty of adjustment and a multi-position steering wheel
Comfort
Saab traditionally delivers comfortable interiors and this is no exception. Exceptionally spacious and class leading, it is nevertheless a calming environment with little wind or tyre noise. Seats are all-day comfortable.
Handling
The 9-3 is set up to be a relaxing, high-speed tourer rather than a sports car, but it offers strong grip in corners and can cope with being driven quickly over twisting roads when the occasion arises.
Practicality
Plenty of storage space with a very large boot. Front and rear cup holders. Loads of leg room both front and rear. The 9-3 is easily on par with upmarket models like the Audi A4, BMW 3-Series and Mercedes-Benz C-Class, there is a decent amount of luggage space and the seats have a 60/40 split for added practicality.
Safety
The 9-3 Convertible was the first car in its class to score five stars in the Euro NCAP crash tests. In addition to the four airbags it also features pop-up roll-over protection should the worst happen and the windscreen surround is massively strong ensuring that it is every bit as safe as the 9-3 Saloon. Deadlocks and an alarm/immobiliser help deter thieves.
