There are very few KX85's that have been converted for use on the road and its great bike first bike if you are vertically challanged. By default, this is my wife's bike and she is 5'6". I bought the bike about 18 months ago.....it was a "bike in a box". Luckily, eveything was there and so I rebuilt it from the frame up and it is now as good as a 2004 bike can be without all new parts. I say this because some of the aluminium castings are very slightly oxidised as are the spokes and the rims.
Here is a list of the work for rebuild / mot
- Powder coated the frame in a glossy silver metallic that looks better than new and is as hard as nails.
- Rebuilt the engine with new bearings, piston and seals.
- New chain and sprockets
- New brakes pads
- Forks serviced
- New polished aluminium radiator
- New plastics
- New decals
- Re-packed exhaust
- Installed speedo/odo
- Installed pressure switches and brake lights
- Installed horn and button
- Frame guards
- New brake and throttle cables
- New tyres
- New inner tubes
After completing this work my wife decided, having never riden a bike before, she would like a go. The next problem was trying to get her off. Anyway we now go off at the weekends green laning and we even watch motocross on the main tv.....does it get any better? She now feels she is ready for a full size bike and is ready to take her full test. She is also off to portugal in March with some other enduro-mad girls, so needs to look the part.
The bike has a full MOT but can only be used during daylight as it has no headlamp. It has no headlamp because it would need a replacement stator with a lighting coil (£90), if this was done and a headlamp and switch fitted, you can ride it at night without getting an MOT re-test. The brake lights work off pressure switches (very neat and water proof) and a 9v battery held under the seat...becasue the brake light is LED it has so far lasted 4 months.
The engine starts first time, runs and idles beautifully, the ignition is set a little retarded to give the bike more torque. The tyres are almost new and there is also a spare set of road tyres should you have mot problems. Being a motocross bike the brakes are epic. The speedo/odo works well and is accurate. When I registered the bike it was given a 2003 registration even though it is 2004 because they always look at the earliest possible manufacturing date.
You can get about 45/50 miles on one tank of fuel....but you can buy an extended range tank. I usual end up carrying a litre of fuel for emegencies.
The bike is always washed, greased and WD40'd after every outing.
I can deliver for 50p per mile.
