This coin is a very Limited Edition Piedfort 24K Gold Plated Proof Coin Commemorating the the Life of Edward III 1312 - 1377. Piedfort coins are struck using blanks which are thicker than normal blanks. As their name suggests they have close association with France, where from the twelfth century, they were apprantly used by the King as presentation pieces. In Britain the practise of striking Piedforts is later and less frequent, but medieval and Tudor examples are known.
