IN 2001 EXACTLY ONE HUNDRED YEARS AFTER THE DEATH OF QUEEN VICTORIA, THE VICTORIAN ANNIVERSARY COLLECTION CELEBRATES THE VICTORIAN ERA AS ONE OF ENORMOUS CHANGE AND PROGRESS
Both the crown and the sovereign have formed part of the currency since Tudor times and both still enjoy worldwide popularity with collectors. Since 1817 all sovereigns have been struck in 22 Carat Gold to a weight of 7.98 Grams and with a diameter of approximately 22 Millimetres. The Victorian Anniversary Gold Proof Crown, also struck in 22 Carat Gold, has a diameter of 38.61 mm weighs 39.94 grams and is subject to an issue limit of 3,500. Only 733 of these, however, have been specially treated for the Victorian Anniversary Collection and feature on both obverse and reverse a frosted field with a polished Royal Portrait.
