2 GEORGIAN Silver FRUIT BERRY SPOONS Hallmarked 1778 NR
London - Gilt Bowls - BOTTOM MARKED - Rare Cased Set
This is a very rare GEORGIAN FRUIT SERVING SET consisting of TWO Georgian solid sterling silver table or serving spoons which were made in London, England in about 1778, by the illustrious Georgian silversmiths, William Sumner I & Richard Crossley at their Clerkenwell Close workshops. The table spoons are in the Old English pattern with a single drop heel and have stunning embossed berry decoration to the bowl and are lightly gilded to the bowls. Each are engraved with bright cut decoration to the front of the handles. They are NOT engraved to the cartouches on the handles. Each table spoon is 8 7/8" long overall and almost 1 7/8" across the bowl. Each weighs 79.2g - together well over 5 troy oz.
They are in EXCELLENT condition with much less than the usual surface scratching and NO splits, dents or dimpling - see photograph. There is almost NO wear to the gilding. Each tablespoon is hallmarked to the bottom of the stem with WS over RC, lion passant (sterling silver assay mark), crowned leopard head, and a date letter - all somewhat deformed due to reforming after assay - showing they were both hallmarked in London in about 1776. I have shown the hallmarks so that you can make up your own mind. They come in their original gold tooled burgundy leatherette box which is lined with purple silk. The box is in very good condition but needs a little attention. A SUPERB PAIR of GEORGIAN fruit berry spoons after 230 years at a very low start and NO RESERVE!!!!!
