19thC Rosewood Fully Fitted Vanity/Jewellery Box

 Silver Hinges, Lock & Catches; Silver Topped Jars Etc

For auction is a 19th century vanity & jewellery box in rosewood, mounted with brass edging, cartouche & escutcheon; the hinges, lock and catches in silver with beautiful chased decoration, the interior fully fitted and complete with silver topped jars.

This box is offered in pretty good overall condition for around 150 years old with no major issues. The interior is exceptional and oozes quality in every detail. The exterior is highly polished. The brass inlay is complete apart from one piece of edging (rear bottom ) which is unseen. There is also a small sliver of veneer missing in the same area. There are a few small surface cracks and a number of marks to the finish-to be expected with a box of this age. And in a certain light there are numerous very small surface scratches, but these are noted simply for accuracy as no minor faults detract from the overall good condition and quality of this box. It locks (sticks sometimes in locked position) & comes complete with key & key tassle.

The lid interior is padded with blue ruched velvet. This pulls down to reveal a lift-out vanity mirror and a love-letter pouch. Included are a number of items including a letter & 2 business cards which suggest the lady owner was in a relationship with a London gentleman, whilst the lady apparently lived in Devon. I know this box was in storage in Dawlish for very many years. It still contains the storage depot ticket.

Below the lid is a gallery for 5 scent bottle and vanity jars with silver plated lids which appear to be all original and undamaged. In front of this is a lift-out tray, finished in blue velvet, fitted to hold 3 oblong jars with plated lids, 2 small scent bottles and 2 small vanity jars with plated lids. The smallest rectangular jar has sadly been broken & re-glued so it is still functional and the glass is unseen in the tray. There is also a lidded compartment fitted to hold 4 manicure items with faux tortoiseshell handles. Below the tray is a large space for jewellery or other vanity items.

Push a silver button on the back rim of the box and a concealed jewellery drawer pops out of the front . The release spring and catch work fine. The jewellery drawer is fitted to hold jewelery items and is lined with blue silk and blue leather with gilt tooling.

So, a top quality vanity & jewellery box is good overall condition for 150 years old, with provenance, and some minor faults which pale into insignificance overall and most of which could be easily remedied if required.

The box is a substantial 12" by 9" by 7" high and weighs over the 5 kilos.  (please see postal details below).
