English Naval Single
Draw Telescope 1st half 19thC
This telescope is optically very
good and gives a nice clear, sharp image. Obviously therefore all the lenses are
there; starting with the objective, a separated doublet clean and free of
scratches . In the draw tube are three other lens sets with two of them
appearing to be doubles , ( I know little of the variations and set up of
telescope lenses) they are all however in good clean and bright condition. The
whole telescope takes apart surprisingly easily showing that there is no brass
tarnishing, which is often found with age and if it were ever used at sea, with
the action of salt. There is a small dent on the draw tube as shown in the last photo.
There are unfortunately
no makers marks or numbers . The leather covering looks original and is covering
a wooden casing. Both lens cover slides are replacements, as the originals were
missing. The brass lacquer is all original and has some tarnishing , but not bad
for it's age. As far as I can deduce , the type and design of the telescope is
typical of the first half of the 19th Century. The diameter of the objective
lens is 1 1/2 inches and the outer diameter of the scope is 2 1/2 inches. It's
closed length is,- 14 1/2 inches and fully extended ,- 24 inches. Weight is just
under 1 Kilo.
