Victorian Mother of Pearl Inlaid Rosewood Fitted Jewellery Box/Casket; Locking/Key

For auction is a Victorian jewellery box or casket finished in rosewood with inalid mother of pearl escutcheon, raised on 4 bun feet; with lathe-turned drop ring handles; locking with key; the form influenced by the late Victorian Egyptology fad.

This jewel box is offered in good antique condition for around 125 years old with no major defects. It has a few of the usual knocks, marks, indents & hairlines one would expect with a box of this age but nothing to detract.

The fitted interior is crisp & clean, lined with royal blue lining paper decorated with gilt fleir de Lys motifs. There is a mahogany fitted lift out tray with 6 open compartments, 3 lidded compartments with their original tiny knobs (the central one has an indetn -pic # 3) and 2 fixed cushions for brooches/stick pins, covered in royal blue satin. The tray lifts out to reveal a large space for more secure storage. The hinges lock & keep are all solid & the lock works fine as it should, though the keep has part of one tooth missing it does not affect the working of the lock.

It is a good sixe at 14" wide (including the handles) by 8 1/2" deep by 7 1/4" high & weighs 1809 grammes or approaching 2 kilos. To post in the UK will be £8.06 standard parcels.
