This vehicle has really been beautifully kept, the interior is virtually as new whilst the exterior is simply excellent. The W124 E-class is widely regarded as the best built car Mercedes have ever made, with the build quality and thoroughness of engineering of newer examples being incomparable to these. This one is the 280E (same as the E280) with the newer 24 valve straight six engine, which was only introduced just months before this example was made. The car has always been a local car, we have an original Mercedes warranty booklet showing the cars sale in 1994 at 13,000 miles, which was for £25,500 and sold by Lark Valley Mercedes-Benz here in Bury St Edmunds. The mileage on the car has just reached a meagre 134,760, which is certainly well below average for one of these, most of these are accruing huge mileages with many having covered over 400,000 quite easily. The previous owner is supplying us with the service booklet which has been kept filed away at home, we will update the listing with details of the servicing intervals as soon as we receive it. The car does of course boast a full service history. The car has all the documents as well as the book pack and handbooks. The car has a current MOT to August 2008 which it flew through with not even an advisory, but as mentioned the car will be supplied with a brand new MOT to May 2008, for this we believe the car will require new front brake discs and pads which we will have replaced at the time of the MOT. DRIVING I was astonished at just how taut and fresh feeling this car feels, the engine starts immediately with no hesitation, smoke, or hunting, and the oil pressure reads a strong and consistent 3 bar, and maintains a perfect operating temperature once the car has warmed up. Upon completing its cold start enrichment cycle the engine idles at just over 500rpm and is perfectly balanced, it does not judder like your typical example, simply idles ultra quietly and smoothly. The steering and suspension are both taut and precise with no rattles or knocks whatsoever, and the suspension still feels very ‘together’ and not at all floaty. As you would expect, the gearbox changes seamlessly and behaves exactly as it should, with a perfect kickdown. I would suggest you would not be able to find any W124 E-class anywhere that is smoother, more responsive or any ‘tighter’ feeling. BODYWORK The bodywork is absolutely superb and certainly well above average for a car of this age, walking round it I can really find nothing significant of note, certainly there is no rust or corrosion or dents, and the only two minor points I can note is a light scratch to the offside rear panel by the fuel filler which we will very likely be able to polish out, and the small metal trims beneath the headlights have become stonechipped, if desired we are able to have these professionally refinished at no extra charge prior to collection. Other than that I suggest it is certainly as clean a car as you are going to find. INTERIOR The interior is quite simply spotless, I cannot think of any other way to descibe it. The sense of newness that it imparts is uncanny, open the doors and even the door shuts are spotless, whilst the leather is without question the cloest to new looking I have ever seen on a car of this age, with the exception of a small area of piping on the front centre fold down armrest, all the leather is as new and exhibits no signs of wear whatsoever, whilst the carpets have been protected by the original Mercedes overmats and have not lost any of their colour or faded whatsoever, and the interior still even has that new leather smell to it, unsurprising considering the car has certainly never been smoked in. As a testament to this cars originality, it even retains its factory specification Blaupunkt ‘Verona’ radio cassette unit. I have thoroughly checked all the electrics and can report that absolutely everything works as it should. WHEELS AND TYRES All 4 tyres are good and have plenty of tread remaining, wheel wise the car retains the factory Mercedes classic 8 pot alloy wheels, all of these are in excellent condition overall although a couple may have very minor scuffing to the wheel rim lip. The car will go to the highest bidder with no reserve. We can put a warranty on most of our cars at extra cost if desired - Ebay sales are not warranted per se as they usually sell with a smaller profit margin than they would elsewhere, but we can usually supply a warranty on collection if desired - We are not able to supply a warranty with this vehicle due to its age. The car must be collected and paid for in full within 5 days of the auction ending, and the winning bidder must get in contact within 24 hours of auction end otherwise we will leave negative feedback and chase up re-listing costs. For payment we accept bankers draft or cheque (would need to clear prior to car being handed over), however we would suggest a direct bank transfer (known as a CHAPs transfer) or payment by card as the best option. We have a card machine which accepts most payment cards - VISA, Switch, Mastercard, American Express etc. Debit card transactions are free, credit cards are charged at 2.5% as this is simply what the bank charge us. DELIVERY We are also able to arrange nationwide delivery to your door, we use an experienced and professional car transport company, the vehicles are carried on a car transporter rather than driven to you and the company is of course fully insured, please allow a reasonable time frame for this to be organised but we can usually deliver the car within the week after auction end. The car and transport cost must be paid for in full prior to the cars being delivered – we can take payment over the telephone via our card machine or via a bank transfer. The cost of delivery is £1.30 per mile + VAT (from Bury St Edmunds to your door), this is a one way charge (i.e we don’t charge you for the return mileage!).
