I purchased this vehicle in March and it was in need of attention, largely due to poor paintwork. The previous keepr/fellow enthusiast was attatched to this car as he had spent a lot of time and money replacing several parts/componments and was pleased that he had found a buyer (myself) who would continue spendature and time on this ever rare classic. He informed me that to his knowlege, the car was off the road and garaged for several years from 1992.
Although it looked tatty, had several cosmetic issues and the suspension was frankly dreadful, it was as near as damn it original and I saw it had potential. It certainly ‘wasn’t as bad as it looked!’
I have had two SD1’s prior to owning this one and neither were anywhere near as reliable.
The previous keeper notified me that this car is also known as the 'Blue2’ on the SD1 owner’s website. It gained the name as it is of course ‘blue’ and is a series ‘two’.
The car is of great interest and has an extensive forum(s) with regards to it having, or having had fitted, an ‘Engine Warmer’.
I am unaware of it having an engine warmer however and am afraid will be unable to comment or answer any questions you may have relating to this.
Description of work carried out during my ownership:
(1) When I purchased the vehicle, there were many paintwork defects and was in need of completely repainting to both the near side and off side. This has been professionally carried out.
(2) The last keeper had replaced the fuel tank but the gauge was inoperative. I have had a new fuel sender fitted and the gauge is now functioning correctly.
(3) The rear shock absorbers had leaked their fluids resulting an extremely bouncy ride! I have had complete new rear suspension fitted (shock absorbers and springs)
The above parts have been ordered and bought from Rimmer Brothers, a genuine SD1 parts company.
(4) The underside was in good condition and required no welding. The underseal however, had worn in several places. I have completely treated the underside including all wheel arches.
(5) The inspection lamps in the engine bay were inoperative as were several other lit instruments. These have been repaired and are now functioning properly.
(6) The engine bay has been professionally cleaned and has had high temperature paint applied to the manifolds for protection.
(7) The exhaust has been replaced from the Y piece back with a large stainless steel system which has a twin outlet. It complements the V8 vocals but not horrifyingly noisy.
(8) A fourteen hour professional clean to the interior and exterior has been carried out. There are a few extremely light scratches to the bonnet and roof but as you can see from the photographs, it looks exceptional. Other than the inside of the boot which cleaned reasonably well, the interior is very, very clean and looks simply stunning and luxurious.
Description of work carried out by the last keeper shortly before me purchasing it (I have paperwork to confirm some but most of the work is evident):
New rear wheel cylinders, back plates, hose & adjusters
New brake shoes
Front brake pads
Ignition module
Spark plugs
Rotor arm
HT leads
Fan belt
Temperature sensor
Brake master cylinder
Clutch master cylinder
Air filter
Dizzy cap
Fuel filter
Fuel pump
plus Second hand parts as follows:
Fuel tank
Brake balance valve
Description/list of work required that I am aware of and believe are necessary in order to make this SD1 COMPLETELY superb:
(1) Roof lining is sagging but not torn
(2) Sunroof doesn’t shut level (should lift at final point of closure so is flush to roof). It does open and close but the mechanism is poor and requires attention. It is scratched as a result of it being opened & closed whilst out of alignment which I have tried to photograph (see below).
(3) Antenna/aerial is missing
(4) OSR window doesn’t open or close
(5) Oil pressure gauge reads from right to left as apposed from left to right (maybe plugged in reverse order?)
(6) There is a recent oil leak from the rear of the engine toward the top end (birds eye view = centre of rear and about four inches down). It may be possible to loosen the area required, re-seal and tighten up but haven’t had it investigated enough to give a certain diagnosis.
(7) The chrome trim above the grille is a little tatty
(8) Scuff to ns bumper corner
(9) Binacle cover needs replacing
(10) Front fog lamp surrounds are corroded (Ihave replacements which will be included in the sale)
(11) Two small dents at very front of bonet (touched in)
It would be worth giving it a service as I am unsure of its last. To my best knowledge however, the above is all that is required to make this SD1 something quite special. It is simply due to lack of funds and my own time that I am unable to finish my ‘checklist’.
The car of course looks beautiful as it is and quite flatteringly, receives endless compliments. I very much hope, the lucky buyer continues to give this SD1 the attention it has received of late as there are few left as nice as this.
