Moto Guzzi V1000 G5
1979 (first registerd 1981 W)
The G5 is like an 850 T3 but with the larger Spada motor.
A good looking and practical classic which is a comfortable and economical tourer with lots of torque.
This is a bike which has been in use summer and winter since I have owned it (except since last May when it has been dry-stored with monthly 10 mile runs to keep it healthy)) and while mechanically sound it shows the normal marks of regular use. It’s running really well and I’d be happy to ride it again to Europe tomorrow.
I am selling my Guzzi because I’ve bought a new bike and need the room. It is currently on SORN but has a current MOT (expires Dec 08)
I have owned and regularly serviced this bike since 1985 when it was fitted with a lightweight sidecar and leading link suspension. I removed the sidecar 8 years ago fitting standard forks. I have done about 40,000 miles and believe it had done a similar mileage when I bought it. It’s not on its original speedometer but shows just less than 46,000 miles. Riding it since its recent MOT I’ve noticed that although the front tyre has plenty of tread, the sidewalls are developing fine cracking due to age. If I was keeping the bike I would fit a new front tyre despite 3mm tread in centre. Rear tyre has only done 3500 miles and has 4mm tread in centre. The bike has its original front crashbars and rear pannier frames. I have adapted an old pair of Craven panniers to fit and these can be included. It also has a rear carrier which can easily be removed.
Sensible modifications / improvements as follows:
Timing gears, stainless braided brake hoses, stainless 2-1 exhaust system (made by West Coast Racing-free breathing but not excessively loud and no need to remove silencer to remove rear wheel), K and N filters, larger main jets, electronic ignition (all parts to convert quickly back to points included) lightweight throttle springs, high output (police type) regulator, halogen sidelamp, uprated headlamp, California locking sidestand and Datatag security.
During my ownership the following work has been carried out: New exhaust valves, new u/j, updated engine breather valve and Le Mans breather box, new gear change return spring, recent battery, rewound alternator (Bradford Ignition services), new oil pressure switch, new fork stanchions, springs and dampers, regular servicing - Oil (Valvoline Racing 20/50), oil filters, diff and gearbox oil (including molyslip). Optimoly grease on all shaft splines.
Spares include all cables, original California type screen with brackets, Spada 3 piece faring (never fitted) , Fork brace, Haynes manual, factory workshop manual, ‘Guzziology’ by Dave Richardson (the Guzzi bible), loads of receipts.
