Item Description
1971 Strike Post Inland Letter Service overprinted "Apollo 14 Moon Landing 5 Feb 1971". Issued for one day only; scarce.
The Great UK Postal Strike lasted for 44 days between 20th January and 5th March 1971 and its impact was total with nearly 99% of Postal Workers joining the strike. The problem of postal deliveries was taken up by a large number of "local" and "International" delivery services manned by enthusiasts & volunteers who, with Post Office approval, produced stamps, covers, miniture sheets and the like which were used to pay for the service. These stamps and covers are now collectors items and are quite remarkable in their depth. Clive Smith has produced a series of catalogues that detail the services, the stamps issued and their relative scarcity. Compared to regular Post Office issues there numbers are small but, usefully and equally, their value is usually below GBP 10.00 for stamps and GBP 15.00 for covers. There are, of course, many exceptions! They are fascinating area for the collector and offer a rewarding and very cost effective hobby.
