1969 Land Rover 110 F/C Overland Expedition Vehicle
Once a South African military radio communications van I undertook a challenge to transform this rather basic vehicle into a “state of the art” off road, luxury camper. Little did I know that it would be the beginning of a 12 year project – but it was more than worth it.
I scoured the global market for the best fittings and fixtures and had no hesitation in paying high prices for quality military and marine 'new' components. My 40 years personal experience of the African terrain, coupled with my design and creative background, helped me to build a vehicle equipped to a very high standard both on a practical and ‘comfort’ level. Being a perfectionist in my work I paid attention to the smallest detail.
This is probably the finest restored Land Rover 110 forward control in the ‘World’. Land/Rover 110 f/c made only 3,500 vehicles during its entire production, so it’s now a very rare, Land Rover collector’s dream.
A TV broadcast video has been made on this vehicle and, as quoted above, it was also featured in the Land Rover magazine as “the best camper ever built” and “luxury personified”.
It boasts over 2000 screws/nuts, and fittings made of Stainless Steel, interior furnishings made of solid oak, and the finest grade of treated, Marine 5/7 ply, and comfortably sleep’s up to four people. One large double" bed, and two singles". However, it must be seen to be fully appreciated.
I estimate that the cost of materials, and fittings alone was over £35,000 at that time and would probably be double that amount now. This does not take into account the amount of time design, and labour involved which runs into thousands of hours! (over 12 years).
Due to changes in my personal circumstances and my advancing years I regrettably have no option but to sell my camper. I would like to think that it will go to a good home and to someone who will appreciate it and the love and labour that has gone into this once in a lifetime "Land Yacht".
It was designed for overland cross-country driving but only saw one major trip from S. Africa to Nairobi.Because of political unrest North of Nairobi the borders were closed, or to dangerous to travel any further at that time. It was then shipped to the UK. The vehicle has been in storage at a caravan storage depot in the UK for five years. During that time it has not been driven and so the following items have deteriorated and require attention: 1) Pop up roof tent needs replacing. (£100-140) 2) Master Clutch cylinder rubbers have perished. (requires new) 3) Master brake cylinder rubbers have perished. (reguires new.) 4) New points, new plugs and new condenser needed (minor). Otherwise mechanically it is in an ‘excellent plus’ condition. The engine runs smoothly, as a new engine had been fitted. I estimate that to repair the Two master cylinders could cost in the region of £.300- £500.
I am prepared to meet the cost of having the vehicle towed to a destination within a 200 mile radius of the caravan storage depot in Welwyn Garden. If it is not sold in its present condition (in other words, ‘as is’) then I propose to M.O.T. the camper and of course then it will be sold at a considerably higher price.
The vehicle mileage is only 11,700 KM The numerous spares that come with this vehicle include: New spare Land Rover clutch and pressure plate New Water Pump and "numerous" other spares all unused and still in their original sealed boxes. Below I have set out just 'some' of the features and fittings: The price includes the cost of towing the truck up to a radius of 200 miles.
If the vehicle is collected/ towed away by buyer, or any other method I will give a discount of £.800.00 on the price. unfortunately this Caravan Storage Depot have strict rules that do not allow any mechanical work performed on site, or even the "Cleaning" of Caravans, otherwise I would have sold it differently.
