Puch, a Phenomenon in History:
Who
didn't heard of it or didn't ride one of these? When Johann Puch
decided to start his own company, they were only focused on building
motorcycles. But in the early fifties, Puch discovered a new market,
the moped. Soon, this Austrian factory made their first example, named
the Steyr-Daimler-Puch MS 50, today better known as baby-Puch because
it's the first version and has a rather fragile and small body. Real
Puch-freaks swear here the year counting started.
In
the beginning sales didn't go very well and seemed that nobody was
waiting for such a new innovative product. But more and more, mopeds
were becoming a new sort of cult, a new way of living and fitted really
great in the new ideas of that time. Puch was on the right place at the
right time.
Because
Puch was a European company, it first conquered Europe, but soon it
also penetrated the worldmarket. Many export-models were shipped all
over the world. Even when Tomos made an exact copy of the Puch MV 50
model, it didn't strucle the original.
Unfortunately
nothing is forever, because a lot of other companies smelled money and
made their own interpretations of the moped, resulting in a great scala
of different brands and models. Besides that, governments in many
countries restricted the use of mopeds, like wearing helmets, decrease
of maximum horsepower, etc.
At
the end, this was too much for Puch, the innovative factory got broke
in the late eighties. The brand Puch is still in use for commercial
goals, but we as real Puch-riders know this isn't the Puch we love.
Real Puch mopeds are from the 50s, 60s and 70s. And we will let the
world know!

1962 PUCH NOMAD MOPED Model MS 50 VD
In
1962, the Austrian company Puch offered two models in the UK, the
slightly more upmarket 59cc Cheetah ‘Scooterette’ which sold for £99
17/- 6d, and this model, the bog-standard 50cc MS 50 Nomad, for £82 10/-
Despite
its bog-standardness, it’s a very attractive little machine, pretty
enough and different enough to elicit curious glances wherever you go.
According
to the chassis plate, this model is a MSVD. My research reveals that
the MS 50 V model was imported from 1960 onwards. The Nomad model that
replaced it, the VS50, was imported from November 1964.
You
may be familiar with the later Puch mopeds such as the Maxi, but these
late 50’s/ early 60’s models have now become very scarce. The above
translation declares, in no uncertain terms, that Puch were the first
company to introduce mopeds to the world, and that the MS50 is the
original, real moped!
So …a moped with a pedigree!

To sum up this particular one in a nutshell, so you know what you’re buying:
1.
It’s in good running order, though it’s been laid-up for 2 years (the
previous owner gave up riding). Prior to that, he used it regularly and
it covered several thousand miles a year.
2.
It is in very sound original unrestored condition. Such a description
can often cover a multitude of rusty sins: here you are getting a sound
bike that has not yet had the ‘treatment.’ That is becoming
increasingly rare, as we are all constantly restoring our prides and
joys. But this one is still waiting for you to lavish time and caring
on it, to bring it back to how it would have looked 44 years ago when
it was on sale for £82 10/-
...Or, better still, to leave it as it is - 'in its own juice,' as they say in France.
3. The paint is faded, shocker chrome is pitted. New tyres; good saddle; good mudguards and tinware; good wheels; good exhaust.
4.
It was taxed and MOT'd until December 2006. I bought it 2 years ago
(the photos were taken over a year ago, when I still had that silly
pink Beetle). I can’t see anything that it would fail a test on, but I
have only given it a quick once-over.
Essentially,
it is sound and complete and would make an ideal first classic vehicle
for someone who prefers a mount that is easy to maintain and ride. It's
a great bike to take to shows and rallies this summer. Puch enjoy an
enviable reputation for build-quality and reliability, and you can
still get parts for them from Austria.

Puch's Famous Pin-Up Advertising Posters

Over the years, Puch cornered the market in pin-up posters to advertise their products.

The fifties posters are quite glorious...

There was obviously little point having a pin-up provocatively posed on the Puch 125cc Laro 3-Wheeler Utility model...

2-Stroke engines – and cyclemotors in particular - are notoriously
unreliable. Basic servicing is generally required if unused for even a
