THE STEEL-FRAMED HOUSE
32 pages with 58 photos and illustrations, 11 in color[Bethlehem Steel]: THE STEEL-FRAMED HOUSE [subtitle: Bethlehem Steel Report Showing How Architects and Designers are Making Imaginative Use of Light-Steel Framing in Houses]. Bethlehem, PA: Bethlehem Steel, n.d. [the company’s NYC address uses the old-fashioned zip code “4,” which means the book was published before 1963]. Original edition. A very good or better staple-bound booklet with printed stiff wrappers: minor shelf wear and notations in blue ink on the back cover’s upper left-hand side. Interior unmarked and very clean. Out-of-print. 8.5 x 11 booklet with 32 pages and 58 photos and illustrations, 11 in color. Modernism made for strange bedfellows: the steel behemoth’s booklet extolls the virtues of uncluttered interiors, curtain walls, and clean flowing lines. The photographs of modern homes and simplistic floor plans (lacking measurements details) are awe-inspiring. The homes’ architect or designer is mentioned in the photo captions and/or in the short essay that accompanies each home. “The segregation of structure from walls provides a design flexibility not otherwise possible, and sets no limitations as to the selection of wall panel material.” --Craig Ellwood Architects or designers credited in the booklet include: Pierre Koenig (2 different houses); Ulrich Franzen (his own home in Rye, New York, and a home with clustered steel "umbrellas" on for its roof); Francisco Artigas (his Newton T. Bass home in Apple Valley, California); David Thorne (his "Tree House" done for jazz pianist Dave Brubeck and a mountain house ); Raphael S. Soriano (luxury apartments); Paul Hamilton; Bolton and Barnstone of Houston; Craig Ellwood Associates (a case study house); John McKay (a beach house); William Krokyn (a city house); and George Mock (a 2900 square foot house in Honolulu).
