Original ZOS Drawing Austin Osman Spare Occult Art Signed AOS '54
Orig. Magic Drawing - Pencil, Pen & Blood? ~ Witches' Sabbat
Titled: Moon-wrack
by
Austin Osman Spare
Measurements: 210mm x 235mm (8.5" x 9.25") approx.
Beautifully executed, pencil & select ink drawing on paper, titled "Moon-wrack", signed and dated by Austin Osman Spare - '54 AOS'. An interesting feature of this drawing, is the extra undisclosed media used, which has the appearance of dark reddish-brown smudges, which color the background, and add a quality of depth, and magical energy. It is evident in the photos I have provided, and is even more striking when you view the drawing up close, and in real life. While I cannot be absolutely certain of the extra-media used, I have a strong suspicion that it could be blood. It certainly has that appearance, consistency and color of dried, faintly smudged blood. One can imagine Spare, drawing at the frenetic pace that he did, sustaining an accidental (or deliberate) cut, and then using his blood to color the drawing, adding depth and swirling energy, that is so evident in this art work.
This drawing is an authentic, original art work by Austin Osman Spare. It was purchased directly from Fulgar, and is one of a last series of drawings from a Zos sketchbook, dealing with scenes of sabbatic revellery, magic evocation and metamorphosis. The following information is quoted from Fulgar, when this, and other drawings were put up for sale:
"The following drawings and sketches represent the final offering from a Zos ’scrapbook’ compiled by a friend of Spare, the collector Ernest Chapman. The material dates from 1953-1955 and includes a series of pencil drawings in the sabbatic theme that include images of metamorphosis and pan-sexual tension now familiar to admirers of the artist.
Spare often worked at great speed when delineating ideas in this way and these sketches reflect the fluid dynamism necessary for semi-automatic work. Spare has signed, dated and titled the majority of these sketches, which is quite rare. This perhaps indicates he intended these as illustrative material for the Logomachy and other manuscript work he was developing with Kenneth Grant at this time." - Fulgar
This is certainly a rare opportunity to own an original & authentic, occult artwork by Austin Osman Spare. If my theory is right, about him adding his blood, to color this drawing, then from the magical (and might I add, necromantic) point of view, it would make this drawing, into an invaluable magical talisman. As with pacts of old, drawn in blood, there is nothing more powerful in magic, than the actual blood of a great magus.
This drawing can be shipped in its frame, or rolled up in a tube, without the frame. Shipping insurance will be required, and will be worked out after the sale.
