This unique 94 page book is a re-publication of a rare book first published in 1953. The original is now in the public domain.
The 1950s, dawn of the atomic age, when women wore their hairstyles generally shorter than their 1940s counterparts. Although hairstyles may not have been as elaborate, they certainly were just as glamorous.
This book will show you in detailed steps how to cut hair and how to style it in 13 basic 1950s styles. The components of these different styles can be interchanged to make many other styles.
As with most skills it takes practice, practice, practice

FINGER WAVING
The word "fingerwave" means the motion of the finger, combined with the movement of the comb and the knowledge of the manipulation of this combination. Emphasis on fingerwaving cannot be stressed too strongly as it is one of the most valuable and important phases of hairstyling. The hairdresser who never learned how to fingerwave correctly is comparable to the man who never learned to walk correctly.
It is often said by many Hairdressers "I can set the hair style all right, but I have trouble combing it out." Yes, it is quite easy to push, drag or pull some semblance of a fingerwave in the hair, pin it down and put a net on it. When the time comes to comb and dress it, he thinks his trouble begins. But in reality the trouble began with the set, because if the hair is correctly shaped and molded into waves and lines, when it is dry and the comb is run through it, it falls naturally in the correct lines.
Study this finger wave series carefully because you will find on these following pages a method of fingerwaving that is beautiful, natural and lasting.

PIN PLACEMENT
Proper pin placement is very important. Study carefully these illustrations. Pin placement will contribute to the success or failure of good hairstyling.
For many years the use of hair pins was most popular. Then came the bobby pin, which is used quite widely. The use of clips are now popular. You will find all of them, and their correct usage illustrated in these sketches.
Our concern, is the proper use of, or mainly the proper placement or insertion into the curl, of the items used. An incorrect placement of the pin in the curl can easily ruin a good curl and consequently ruin what might otherwise be a good lasting hair style.
_____________________
Now that you have studied a variety of styles ranging from Style No. 1 through Style No. 13, we will show a few complete styles using a combination of the various numbers in the past series. This will show you how you can combine most any two or three style numbers to arrive at a new and different effect. It is no longer necessary, nor is it always advisable, to do the exact line on both sides of the head. The most important thing in hair styling is line and balance. Therefore, keep the features of the face and line of the head in mind so that you may be able to visualize a different effect in each style.
