G. A. L. Burgeon was a pseudonym of Owen Barfield. 1898 - 1997, English philosopher, author, poet, critic and member of the Oxford based literary group The Inklings which included J. R. R. Tolkein, C. S. Lewis, Roger Lancelyn Green and others. Sometimes referred to as "the first and last Inkling", he worked as a solicitor whilst writing extensively, particularly philosophy and literary criticism.
This is the rare first edition of his autobiographical novel

 C. S. Lewis called it a philosophic comedy.
