1938 Bronze Penny

Brief History of the Penny

The Penny measures 32mm across and is 2mm thick. It was last minted in 1967 and was withdrawn from circulation in 1971 when decimalization took place. It was replaced by the much smaller One New Pence which remains legal currency although the ‘New’ was dropped in the 1980s. 

Before decimalization there were twelve pennies to the shilling and 240 pennies to the pound. The penny was also known as 1d rather than 1p as it became known as after decimalization, the ‘d’ being derived from Denarius. Silver pennies were first minted in 785 and are still minted today although only as Maundy Money. How many pennies have been minted over their 1,223 year history I wouldn’t like to think.

There are still plenty of silver pennies around together with the large copper pennies, but by far the biggest amount of demonetized pennies to be found today are the bronze pennies from the reigns of Victoria through to Elizabeth the Second.
