Recovering from the first of such occasions at the age of 25 .He worked his way up from car salesman to become one of the most important American motorcar manufacturers. In 1924 Errett took over the insolvent Auburn make. He managed to get the company to thrive. It was 1926 and it saw him buy the famous Duesenberg Company. The Cord L 29. Was the first car he produced under Cord’s own name. Built in 1929 using mostly Auburn parts. It was a special design produced from patents from Harry Miller. GGG Gordon Buehrig was given the responsibility for the design of the Cord 812 Phaeton and Supercharged Version. It was fitted with an Schwitzer Cummins-Compressor and was easily recognized by its chromed exhaust pipes. With its supercharged engine it was clocked at 120 MPH. His Innovations are now legendary; to give more room in the interior he designed a “step-down” passenger floor. One of the most remarkable and technically advanced cars of the 1930’s. The Cord 812 Phaeton had concealed retractable headlights. These were worked by Chrome plated hand cranks fitted under the dash. Another innovation was to place the horn on the steering wheel. Another was to place the hand-break under the dash. Inspirational design features such as the hubcap having air holes around the outside edge and covering the entire wheel. Out of all these advance features was the Cord 812’s front wheel drive format. It was to be one of the worlds first front wheel drive cars ever to be mass-produced. Style did not lag behind the innovations. Hinges were concealed so as not to interfere with its streamline profile. Running boards were dispensed with altogether. The “Alligator” bonnet with its louvered grill. Chromed pipes and aerodynamic “pontoon-type” fenders all added to a truly advanced out of its time-designed automobile. The modern age of motoring was born The 812’s were the last car produced by The Cord Car Company as it was forced into liquidation shortly after its introduction.
