"Catalogue of the Celebrated Collection of Ancient Marbles the property of the Most Honorable the Marquess of Lansdowne, M.V.O. D.S.O."

An auction catalog for an auction held at Christie, Manson & Woods in London on March 5, 1930.

The auction sale of one of the finest private collections of ancient sculpture put together by an 18th century English collector. Lord Shelburne’s collection was assembled mainly by the Scottish painter and excavator Gavin Hamilton, much of the material coming from his excavations in the vicinity of Hadrian’s Tiburtine villa.

William Petty-FitzMaurice [1737-1805], the 1st Marquess of Lansdowne, Earl of Shelburne, was a noted collector and Whig politician who quarreled on and off with George III and was instrumental in ending England’s war with its’ American colonies.

Hardcover. 6”x10”, 109 pages, 121 lots, plus 38 black & white plates. Covers with light wear, spine head slightly chipped (see photo), and rear of spine with a short, 2” split in the paper covering. Some light cover soil. Contents neat and clean with a very few period penned notations. An ink inscription on the endpaper states that this copy was given to the owner by Lord Lansdowne during a visit in 1934.
