George Heaton Nicholls 1876-1959, English born South African politician, administrator and diplomat.
In the British army he served in India, Burma and the Anglo Boer war. His later posts included district commissioner Northern Rhodesia, Papuan civil servant, Zululand sugar planter, Union House Assembly member, native affairs commissioner, administrator of Natal, high commissioner in London, senator, leader of the Union Federal Party in Natal, and author.

This is his one and only novel, a sensational work at the time which raised the spectre of a takeover by the natives sparked off by a "Kaffir" mine strike.
A scarce and important novel of South Africa.
