The names of the truly great magazines in American journalistic history number very few: Scribner's, McClure's, Cosmopolitan, Century, Hearst's, The American Mercury. But head and shoulders above all, both in longevity and continued excellence, is Harper's Weekly (and its later colleague, Harper's Monthly Magazine.)
The very precepts of American journalism, which would grow through the muckrakers cultivated by S. S. McClure, have their foundation well before the Civil War in the pages of Harper's. And the illustrators who are now revered, who are featured their own postage stamps, began with the war artists working in woodcuts, and later half-tone illustrations, in the pages of Harpers.
I have found a number of fine condition vintage Harper's Weekly at estate sales, and I will now give you a description of the contents and condition of this one.
The main features are in blue above -this World War I vintage magazine is from the era right after Harpers Weekly became the Independent, subtitled Harpers Weekly.
This magazine is in nice condition. It was taken from a disbound ex-libris volume, so it has stitch marks on the spine, and the back cover was removed in the binding process. Otherwise, innards are fine.
