1914 will forever be remembered as the year in which the First World War broke out. The volatile political situation in the Balkan States threatened the stability of both the Austrian and Russian Empires as it had done throughout the previous century. The assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand, heir to the Austro-Hungarian throne and hos wife on June 28th in Sarajevo proved to be the spark that started the conflagration that eventually embroiled all of Europe and involved soldiers from across the world.
Britain declared war on Germany on August 4th. The final straw had been Germany's invasion of neutral Belgium, Cheering crowds surged through the streets of London to gather in Downing Street and outside Buckingham Palace.
