The coin was designed by Victor D. Brenner in order to commemorate the 100th anniversary of President Abraham Lincoln's birth. The designers initials 'VDB' appear on the reverse of a limited number of the 1909 series coins. The Lincoln Cent was the first coin in US history to be stamped with the motto 'In God We Trust'.
