This book comes from a literary very-well-connected source, the Spurgeon family, of whom Sir Arthur Spurgeon (1862-1938) was the General Manager and Chairman of Directors of Cassells, the London based Publishing House. It is one of a number of books I will be listing from the same source, some very rare. So please watch my listings for some scarce, interesting, and very collectable items coming up, including more Baroness Orczy first editions. Very Rare to find on sale, the original Greening & Co., first edition, a third impression from the first year of publication, of the book that started the hugely popular series and the films! Don't miss this opportunity, these rarely come up for sale anywhere (don't take my word for it, check the internet book-sites, and see if you can find one), a first edition, from the original publisher, of Baroness Emmuska Orczy's first Scarlet Pimpernel book. This Sale is for a rare 1905 first edition, 3rd impression of * THE SCARLET PIMPERNEL *, by The Baroness Emmuska Orczy (Mrs Montagu Barstow), not illustrated (as usual for most English first editions of the Pimpernel books), published by Greening & Co., Ltd., London, [first published 1905] this is a stated third impression still from 1905 (see photo's). Size approx 7-1/2 inches x 5 inches, with 312 pages, but lacking the prelim pages (see below, and photo). Apologies for shade variations in the photo's, taken in variable sunlight, with flash assistance. The blue cloth-covered hardcover with gilt titles to front and spine and 'scarlet pimpernel' flower-motif to the front, is darkened on the spine, variably rubbed on the edges, with a little wear loss and bumping on the corners and spine-ends, spine not splitting, some soiling, very sound and boards well attached, and in reasonable condition (see photo's). Inside is incomplete as it lacks the prelim pages (see 3rd photo) between the front pastedown and the title-page, everything from the title-page onwards is present, as a consequence the contents page is detached neatly at the spine-fold but present (see 5th photo), hinges sound and boards firmly attached, the front pastedown has had original owners details clumsily eradicated, no other writing or graffiti, the rear free endpaper has a one-inch lower edge split, binding stretched in places but all other pages attached, although this has caused a 1.5 inch split along the upper spine fold of one sheet, else pages not torn, cut page-edges age-browned but pages not tanned, several page corners had been turned probably when first read and straightened again so not compounded and marked with being left in that state, variable spots of pale foxing, a small amount of pale usage soiling, mostly clean and tidy. A very collectable author, a rare addition to any collection, and unusual to find one in the Greening edition. If you would like any further information or photographs, please feel free to e-mail me.
