Silas Kitto Hocking 1850-1935 was one of the Victorian era's best selling author. Born in Cornwall, son of a mining captain, the overseer of a tin mine and farmer. He was a preacher and author, who spent twenty six years in the ministry of the United Free Church before devoting himself to writing novels, journalism, lecturing, and political activities.

This is the undated 1901 first edition of his story of a young minister, a popular pastor of a wealthy city church who loses faith and finds love and brings about his  her own demise. A tale with humour, pathos, satire and a happy ending.

431 Pages plus 7 full page illustrations.

School Prize bookplate on front endpaper dated 1902.

A solid binding with some wear, foxing to a few pages, all complete.
