Ethel Lillian Voynich 1864-1960 Irish born novelist, translator, composer and revolutionary, daughter of George Boole the mathematician. She was the author of five novels, her most famous was her first book  The Gadfly. This is the first edition of her second novel.

As a child she lived with her brother a mine manager, a religious fanatic and a sadist, and in this novel she relived her experiences through a central character, a boy who is ill treated by his sadistic uncle.
