Kate Douglas Wiggin 1856-1923, American educator and writer started the first free kindergarten in San Francisco in 1878 and through her teaching, training, and writing she promoted the theories of Frederick Froebel, a proponent of early childhood education. A prolific writer of children's fiction she is best known as the author of Rebecca of Sunnybrook Farm. In 1895 she married her second husband and travelled with him throughout Europe including Scotland.
 
This is a 1900 edition of her story of a young American girl, Penelope Hamilton, travelling through the storied land of Scotland, with her "aggressively American" friend Francesca and the more worldly Salemina.
 A witty tale of scones, haggis, romance, poetry, tea, Edinburgh society and small town Scottish life, and finally, a wedding.

313 Pages in total with 56 illustrations some full page by Charles Edmund Brock 1870-1938 the English portrait painter and illustrator
 plus a 16 page publishers catalogue in rear.

Condition
Publishers cloth with Scottish thistle design on spine and front board, a good solid binding, pages are clean, all complete.
Size is 7½ by 5 inches
