18th Cent Oak 8 Day Longcase Clock
Joseph Atkinson, Chesterfield
Here we have a lovely country oak longcase clock from the 18th Cent. The movement is by Joseph Atkinson who is listed as working in Chesterfield, Derbyshire between 1740 and 1770. Unusually he often signed his clocks without a place name.
The clock stands on a shaped plinth (replacement) and the base and trunk have bands of decorative walnut inlay. The long door has an inlaid star pattern and round the edges a band of burr oak. The hood has turned columns and also has a band of burr oak round the door.
The 8 day movement strikes the hours on a bell and has a particularly attractive brass dial. The dial has a silvered chapter ring with fleur de leys half hour markers and some unusual “four seasons” spandrels. The dial has a nicely engraved centre, silvered seconds dial and large (working) date indicator.
The case is in good condition but could do with a little tidying. The bases of the hood columns have some chips and the capital on one quarter rear column is missing. The movement is in good working order and complete with pendulum, weights, bell and a winding key.
The maximum dimensions are:
54cm(21“) wide
194cm(76.5“) high
29cm(11.5“) deep
