HISTORY
WITH AN INTRODUCTION IN TWO VOLUMES
LONDON
Collet Dobson Collet 1812-1898, radical freethinker, campaigner against newspaper taxation, and friend of Karl Marx. Heavily involved in the chartist movement he was secretary for the Peoples Charter Union, the Newspaper Stamp Abolition Committee, and the Association For The Repeal Of Taxes Of Knowledge. This work is a detailed historical account from the introduction of printing in 1471 to the enactment of the newspaper stamp and its abolishment in 1855, and the various methods used by the English government to tax the press and hence control it. Nearly 450 pages in total plus a frontispiece portrait of Collet.
