1897 Magazine Article

A Female Explorer for the National Geographic Society Travels to Borobudur

Up for bids is this rare magazine article from the October 1897 issue of The Century Monthly Magazine. . . "Prisoners of State in Boro Boedor" by Eliza Ruhama Skidmore. This informative, 14 page, nicely illustrated magazine article gives a great picture of what it was like to travel to Borobudur in Java ,Indonesia in the 1890's.This item is an extremely well written, well paced article with quite a few interesting little anecdotes to liven up the narrative. Eliza Scidmore was a great travel writer who subsequently became famous as the person who was responsible for the importation and planting of Japanese cherry trees in Washington DC. . Her easy-going, anecdotal, humorous style of narrative makes this an enjoyable read. Her travels through Indonesia had brought her to the proximity of the great Buddhist temple of Borobudur(she spelled it Boro Boedor). . She and her two female companions had encountered some strange bureaucratic snags in their attempts to visit this wonder of the world and her narrative shows off her pluck in defying the bureaucrats and forging on to her goal of seeing Borobudur. Besides being a fine writer, she had a fine eye for the architecture and art of the East. She does a great job describing Borobudur in all of its mysteriousness. Included in the article are 10 nicely engraved illustrations and one map of Indonesia. Illustrations
Mount Salak, from the Residents' Garden,Buitenzorg
Rice-fields
Wayside Pavilion on Post Road
A Mohammedan Mosque
Transplanting Rice-with Temple of the Dead and Frangipani Grove in the Background
Boro Boedor,from the Pasagran
On the Second Terrace
The Right-Hand Image at Mendoet
On the Upper Circular Terrace, the Latticed Bells, or Lotus-Bud Dagobas
.The map is a sketch map of Indonesia

Eliza Scidmore was working for the Smithsonian Institution and the National Geographic Society on this trip. She did a great job describing the people of Java ,the topography of the island, and the industry of the wonderful people who populated the area at that time. This is not a modern reprint or photocopy but rather an authentic 112 year-old magazine article and a great source of Indonesian history. There are facts, observations, and insights here not to be found in any of today's sources.

The article is in good condition with minor age-toning. Pages are approximately 6 ½ by 9 ½ inches. The article comes rebound in a plastic protective binder. In the USA shipping and handling are $2.50 via USPS 1st Class Mail. Shipping and handling are reduced considerably for multiple auctions won. PAYPAL is accecepted . 7-day return policy for any reason. You may email me for more details.
