1889 Records of the found bodies. This was the record kept by the coroner as bodies were found and identified. Of the estimated 2,205 lives lost about 500 were identified by apparel, rings, lockets, or sometimes survivors.
Warning - the contents of this are real descriptions of how and the condition of the bodies that were found. Keep in mind that some were burned, others suffered and lost limbs, and finally some bodies were not found immediately so that there was deterioration of the body by animals and rot. This is the real record of the finding and identifying of bodies by the coroner. In many instances it is troubling. It is probably for that reason it has been hidden for so long.
In the early 20's or 30's the handwritten account was taken to Cambria Business College and the record was transcribed into a type written document. Two copies were made. One is in the Johnstown Flood Museum (and is really not available to the public) The other I purchased.
I purchased the book actually looking for any record of my own great great grandmother who died in the flood. Evidently no record of her remains were recovered. When to book was transcribed the people organized and index. I am including the index below so that if you are doing research into your history you will know before hand if any record exists in this book.
I have scanned this record into a pdf format. It can be read by Adobe Reader which can be downloaded for free from the Adobe web site. The advantage to the prospective purchaser is that you can get the file sent to you as an email attachment without going through the postal system and paying and waiting. I will need your email address to send the file to you. It is 67 pages long. The file is 1,915 kb. You will need an email address that can take that size of a file. If not I can send it on a CD, but there would be s S&H charge of $4.50 for priority mail. I ask that you do not resell this listing. I am offering it at a nominal fee to recover the expense that I paid to get the original.
As my listing is the only one in Pdf format I will know if you try to profit from it. More importantly the 2205 lost souls will also know. I live and work in Johnstown. All the money from this venture will be put into historical dissemination of knowledge and photos. Please respect the dead when using the information for genealogy. Remember they died in a vicious 40 foot wave of water that had burning kerosene floating on the surface of the water.
