THE THE STORY OF BY LONDON: SIMPKIN, MARSHALL & Co.
The Spanish Armada set sail from Spain in July 1558, with the mission of overthrowing the Protestant Queen Elizabeth I and restoring Catholic rule over England. This is a scarce Victorian paperback, the undated 1888 first and only edition of this long descriptive poem on the battles written by Samuel Jefferson 1841-? F.R.A.S. F.C.S., the Leeds born writer and poet. Part of the preface states: In this historical poem the records of three centuries ago have been closely followed. The dates of the chief events and of the five encounters between the hostile fleets are given in the old style ; they are such as appear in the State papers of the time. The Harleian manuscripts have also yielded much valuable matter. The details of the events of each day, the direction and intensity of the wind, the condition of sea and sky, and the leading particulars of each fight, are all given in accordance with the full accounts which have been transmitted to us. 159 Pages in total
Inscribed and signed on half title page : To my friend John ? with kind regards S. Jefferson. Sept 14. 1888.
