Michel Pauper

By Henry Becque

1887 - Paris - Tresse et Stock

7.5" by 5", 89pp.

DETAILS

An orange half leather hardback with gilt lettering on the spine.

This is a solid edition of a scarce play by Henry Becque and was previously owned by Elizabeth Sherman Cameron.

Henry François Becque (1837 - 1899) was a French dramatist.

He wrote the book of an opera Sardanapale in imitation of Lord Byron for the music of Victorin de Joncières in 1867, but his first important work, Michel Pauper, appeared in 1870. The importance of this sombre drama was first realised when it was revived at the Odon. Les Corbeaux established Becque's position as an innovator, and in 1885 he produced his most successful play, La Parisienne. Becque produced little during the last years of his life, but his disciples carried on the tradition he had created.

Elizabeth Sherman was the youngest child of Charles Taylor Sherman and Eliza Williams. She was also the neice of the American Civil War General, William Tecumseh Sherman and Senator John Sherman.

In 1878 Elizabeth married James Donald Cameron who was Secretary of War under from 1876 to 1877 and Senator for Pennsylvania from 1877 to 1896. Their marriage is generally believed to have been unhappy and born of political expediency (James Cameron was 22 years her senior) and Elizabeth spent much of her later life living apart from her husband with her daughter Martha* in Europe.

Considered one of the most beautiful and intelligent women in the Washington of the late 1870s to early 1880s Elizabeth was romantically linked with the American novelist, journalist and historian Henry Adam
