Sir William Francis Butler 1838-1910 was one of Canada's great military adventures. Born in Ireland he joined the British army and rose to the rank of major general. In 1870 he was commissioned by the Canadian Government to explore conditions in North-western Canada prior to its settlement and to report on the need of troops, the fur trade. the Indians etc, in Saskatchewan, following the course of the Saskatchewan, river from Carlton to the Rocky Mountains. This work is his account of the journey and his part in the Red River expedition. 396 Pages in total plus 6 full page plates and 1 map of British America from Lake Superior to the Rocky Mountains showing Butler's route.
