1876 Danish 20 Kroner 22ct Gold Coin

This is a (rare) chance to own a VF quality 1876 .900 fineness Danish 20 Kroner gold coin. Christian IX on the obverse, and on the reverse is a Lady Liberty and dolphin. Approx 1.2mm thick, with milled edge and mintmaster initials 'CS'.

The 'Mermaid' 20 Kroner has a total mintage of only 1.5 million (351,000 for 1876). It gets is name from a blend of a Lady Liberty enthroned with a dolphin swimming at her feet. This coin is exceedingly popular with the people of Denmark in that the mermaid is the national symbol of the country. Christian IX, pictured on the obverse of the coin, was known as the father-in-law of Europe because two of his daughters and one son married into the royal lines of England, Russia and Greece respectively. His Grandson became the King of Norway.
