ALBUM BEING A series of etchings in heliotype, from the pen and ink drawings of "The Homes Of AmMerGAU", by Eliza Greatorex, and engravings on wood; Introductory chapters on, the rise, development and decline of the religious drama, the journey to the Passion Play. Munich and London
A rare work, a large volume which includes the history and details of the play first performed in 1634 in Bavaria, and a detailed account of the Journey to Oberammergau in 1871, the village and the people. 201 Pages of text plus 24 illustrations mostly by Elizabeth Eleanor Greatorex 1854-1897 the American artist, and 60 large photographs by Joseph Albert, 1825-1886, appointed Royal photographer to the court of Maximillian II in 1858, and inventor of the Albertotype process (collotype on glass) in 1865. This is the most valuable of all the photographic records of the Passion Play. The King of Bavaria Ludwig II attended the performance of the Passion Play in 1871 and commanded that all the dramatic scenes and tableaux be photographed as a memento for his private collection and Joseph Albert spent several weeks photographing and produced 60 photographs exclusively for the King and not for sale to the public. The author of this work, John Jackson was the only person to be given permission by the King the rights to purchase 200 copies of the photographs from Joseph Albert, therefore this work is one of 200 maximum ever published and sold by subscription. All complete with 60 photographs approximately 9 by 5½ inches each.
This volume has a leather bookplate of Elizabeth Gornall, dated Munich June 15 1880, plus her signature and same date on front endpaper.
CONDITION Size is 13 by 11 inches.
